In the Heat of the Night was filmed in Sparta in 1966. This movie was a winner of five Academy Awards in 1967. Many of the locals and residents of Sparta were used as extras while filming. The Misselhorn Art Gallery sells copies of the DVD.
The movie is about Virgil Tibbs, a black man who is arrested for killing a wealthy industrialist after waiting for the midnight train. As time goes on Virgil Tibbs ends up helping the prejudiced white sheriff, Bill Gillespie, solve the crime and furthermore, Virgil eventually through this experience becomes respected by the sheriff and some of his colleagues.
